Molten lava, from volcanic eruptions millions of years ago, cooled and formed the cliffs in this area. The sea cliff beyond Burg Farm retains the impression of a tree, known as MacCulloch’s Fossil Tree, engulfed by lava flow perhaps 50 million years ago.
