The house has an outstanding collection of paintings including work
by Rubens, Titian, Van Dyck and Lely. The Spanish Room is in
gilded leather with a gilded ceiling brought from the Contarini
Palace in Venice. Houses a fine collection of Egyptian artefacts.

Poet and novelist Thomas Hardy designed and lived in the house
from 1885 until his death in 1928. The house contains several
pieces of Hardy’s furniture.

Fine sandy beaches stretch continuously for 3 miles from South
Haven Point to the chalk cliffs of Handfast Point and Old Harry
Rocks, and include Shell Bay and a designated naturist area. The
heathland behind the beach is a National Nature Reserve and a
haven for many rare birds and other forms of wildlife. There are
several public paths and two nature trails here. Bird hides at Little
