provide an education for poor children. It was in use as a school
until 1926. It is now the National Trust’s London information centre
and gift shop.
Carlyle’s House

Historian, social writer, ethical thinker and powerful public speaker,
Thomas Carlyle lived in this 1708 Queen Anne terraced house, close
to the Thames in Chelsea, from 1834 to 1881. His wife Jane is now
considered one of the finest 19th-century women of letters. The
Carlyles’ house drew visitors from the Victorian literary world,
including Dickens and George Eliot. The life and times of the
Carlyles can be seen through the original furniture and decoration of
the house, together with the many books, portraits and personal
relics.

This unique house was built for William Morris and designed by
Morris and the architect Philip Webb. The house contains original
items of fixed furniture created by Morris and Webb, outstanding
wall paintings and stained glass by Edward Burne-Jones. There is a
tea room and gift shop with Arts and Crafts related items.
‘Roman’ Bath
