An ecological centre and peaceful island home to the brown kiwi, a
threatened ground-dwelling bird unique to New Zealand.
Accommodation, activities and educational programs are centred on
the island's ecology. Signposted from Kerikeri township, in the Bay
of Islands. Public access.

Awapikopiko Reserve
Hawke’s Bay
13km east of Woodville, turn off SH2 and travel to Kumeroa, follow
Kumeroa Road to Druce Road. The reserve is on Druce Road and
signposted.
Walking track through 28 hectares of virgin native podocarp forest
in a region where much of the original native forest was cleared.

Visit an eco-tourism experience which includes demonstrations of

Dunn's Bush
North Auckland
Travel 7km north-west of Puhoi village along Ahuroa Road to start
of walking track.
A 3km trail through 100ha of magnificent native forest, with views
out over the surrounding countryside from vantage points. Rich
native flora and fauna, including a giant kahikatea tree.
Public access.

I'Anson Reserve
Bay of Plenty
5km west of Bethlehem township near Tauranga, signposted on
Loop Road.
A 10 hectare recreation area with native forest remnants, wetland
and lake and walking tracks.

Mokotahi Hill
Gisborne
Located at Mahia Beach settlement, 46km east of Wairoa. Turn off
State Highway 2 at Nuhaka. A landmark coastal landform of scenic,
archaeological and historic value. Panoramic views of the
picturesque coast from the summit.

In spectacular limestone country in the Waikaretu Valley, southwest
of Tuakau there are four lowland podocarp forest remnants and an
exceptional limestone cave.

Pouawa Sandhills
Gisborne
19km northeast of Gisborne, on State Highway 35
Protected sanddunes on an attractive coastline. The dunes are
habitat for specialised native fauna and flora. On-site interpretation
of the site's natural values and history. Public access.

Spencer Reserve, Gisborne
10km north of Tolaga Bay near Mangatuna. Turn off State Highway
35 onto Paroa Road to find signposted walking access.
This 31 hectare property is now a public recreation area bordering
the Hikuwai River. The site is of historic and archaeological
significance and contains regenerating riparian forest. Walking
access only is available and the area is ideal for picnics and lovely
scenery.

Taupo Swamp

Adjacent to State Highway 1, 26km north of Wellington.
A 30 hectare protected swamp in a region where few of onceextensive
wetlands remain. The native flax, once used extensively
for fibre, is a feature.
