One of Cooktown’s significant buildings, today’s museum was the convent
of St Mary
when erected in the late 1880s. With its special connection to
the navigator Lieutenant James Cook, the museum’s collection includes an
Endeavour cannon, one of six jettisoned when Cook’s barque struck the
Barrier
Reef in 1770. Other items in the collection include the original
Endeavour anchor, Chinese and indigenous artefacts, early Cooktown and
convent
history.

This historic house complex displays three typical North Queensland
Houses,each furnished in appropriate style, with an emphasis on items
made
inNorth Queensland. The complex includes a simple miner’s cottage
from the
early 1880s, a comfortable villa residence from late in the same
decade
and a 1920s farmhouse.

Herberton Road, Atherton
The only surviving building from a Chinese settlement founded in Atherton
in the
1880s, Hou Wang Temple was constructed of timber and corrugated
iron and
opened in 1903. For decades it was the social and religious heart
of
Atherton’s Chinese community. The existing fittings for the temple,
includingthe elaborate carvings, bell, ding and metal vessels were made in
China.

Stock Exchange 76 Mosman Street, Charters Towers

This grand masonry building was originally built in 1888 as a shopping
arcade, and by 1890 became home to the Stock Exchange. The building
has a
glassed roof interior with tessellated tile floor.

Tent House

The Tent House is a timber-framed house with a canvas roof under a
freestanding galvanised iron roof. This environmental adaptation was once
common in Mount Isa for miners’ accommodation.
