The Workhouse at Southwell is a formidable 19th-century brick
institution with a story to tell about the care of the poor in Britain.
The revolutionary but harsh ‘welfare’ system introduced here in
1824 was adopted nation-wide in the New Poor Law. The building is
the least altered workhouse in existence today, a survivor from the
hundreds that once covered the country. Discover the people who
lived and worked here, what life was like and how things have
changed today.
