Aroha Island

An ecological centre and peaceful island home to the brown kiwi, a threatened ground-dwelling bird unique to New Zealand. Accommodation, activities and educational programs are centred on the island’s ecology.

Awapikopiko Reserve
13km east of Woodville, turn off SH2 and travel to Kumeroa, follow Kumeroa Road to Druce Road. The reserve is on Druce Road and sign posted, (Hawke’s Bay region, North Island).

Walking track through 28 hectares of virgin native podocarp forest in a region where much of the original native forest was cleared.

Bowman’s Bush
Sign posted on Ruru Road, off Dunns Road at Otatara, 7km west of Invercargill, Southland region, South Island).

10 minute walk through 500 year old native podocarp forest – a once-widespread forest type that has largely disappeared in the lowlands of the region.

Bushy Point Educational Area

A 0.6km boardwalk and walking track through diverse salt marsh, swamp shrub land and tall native swamp forest. The area is privately owned and protected under a QEII National Trust covenant. It is part of an internationally important wetland and is habitat to threatened plants and the scarce South Island fernbird. On-site visitor interpretation and guided tours. Visit by arrangement only.

Clay Cliffs
Located on the northern bank of the Ahuriri River, 10km west of Omarama on the fringe of the Mackenzie Country, (Canterbury region, South Island).

An unusual geological formation of spectacular ‘badlands’ eroded pinnacles and gulches. The Clay Cliffs are also an important backdrop to the local high country landscape – a wide braided river valley covered mainly in tussock grassland.

Dunn’s Bush

he track starts on Ahuroa Road 7km northwest of Puhoi village, North of Auckland city (Auckland region, North Island).

A 3km trail through 100ha of magnificent native forest, with views out over the surrounding countryside from vantage points. Rich native flora and fauna, including a giant kahikatea tree.

Jolendale Park
Carpark at top of Aronui Road, off State Highway 8, 2km southwest of Alexandra township, (Otago region, South Island). 

Woodland arboretum of tree species from around the world adapted to semi-arid conditions. Heritage interest also from former mining activities. Pleasant walking opportunities. Privately-owned and protected in perpetuity under a QEII National Trust covenant.

I’Anson Reserve
5km west of Bethlehem township near Tauranga,

A 10 hectare recreation area with native forest remnants, wetland and lake and walking tracks.

Mokotahi Hill
Located at Mahia Beach settlement, 46km east of Wairoa. Turn off State Highway 2 at Nuhaka. (Gisborne region, North Island).

A landmark coastal landform of scenic, archaeological and historic value. Panoramic views of the picturesque coast from the summit.

Pouawa Sandhills
19km northeast of Gisborne, on State Highway 35, (Gisborne region, North Island)

Protected sanddunes on an attractive coastline. The dunes are habitat for specialised native fauna and flora. On-site interpretation of the site’s natural values and history.

Sinclair Wetland
Between Lakes Waihola and Waipori. Turn off State Highway 1 at signpost 33km south of Dunedin and follow the signs, (Otago region, South Island).

A 315 hectare wetland and important bird habitat. Walking tracks, information centre and accommodation facilities. In private ownership and protected under a QEII National Trust covenant.

Takaka Hill Walkway
Starts from a sign-posted carpark at the side of State Highway 60 near the summit of Takaka Hill, between Nelson and Golden Bay, (Nelson region, South Island).

A 2 – 3 hour walk on the summit of Takaka Hill, an area noted for its unusual elevated landscape including spectacular marble karst rock formations, native flora and fauna, and habitat of a giant carnivorous snail. The walkway leads through 152 hectares of protected private land, which is protected in perpetuity under a QEII National Trust covenant. Panoramic views over the Nelson region and Kahurangi National Park in clear weather.

Taupo Swamp
Adjacent to State Highway 1, 26km north of Wellington, (Wellington region, North Island).

 A 30 hectare protected swamp in a region where few of once-extensive wetlands remain. The native flax, once used extensively for fibre, is a feature.
