One family operated this large timber grocery store from 1871–1972. The interior is very intact and is typical of many all-purpose stores once located throughout Queensland.

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

Currumbin Sanctuary is home to more than 1250 native birds and animals, many of them endangered. Visitors can watch the twice daily feeding of masses of wild multi-coloured lorikeets that fly into the Sanctuary seeking supplementary meals.

James Cook Museum

The museum, erected in 1887–89, is located in the former convent of St Mary. The museum’s collection includes an Endeavour cannon and an anchor, jettisoned by Captain Cook when his barque ran aground on the Endeavour Reef in 1770.

The historic houses complex displays, on one site, three typical North Queensland timber houses – a simple miner’s cottage of 1884, a villa residence of 1888 and a farmhouse of 1921.

Royal Bull’s Head Inn

Built in 1847, and extended in 1859, the Bull’s Head Inn is an unusual timber and brick log construction. The Museum is decorated according to evidence of finishes from the 1870s.

The Stock Exchange, built (c.1888) as The Royal Arcade, is a grand masonry building on the main street of Charters Towers.

Temple of Hou Wang & Museum

The temple of Hou Wang, opened in 1903, with its imported Chinese carvings and decorations was built in traditional Chinese design using the Queensland method of timber and tin.

Tent House

The Tent House is a timber-framed house with a canvas roof under a free-standing galvanised iron roof. This environmental adaptation was once common in Mount Isa for miners’ accommodation.

Wolston House is an early stone and brick, two-storey farmhouse built in 1852 but substantially extended in the 1860s.
