CENTRAL REGION
Ayers House

Constructed of local bluestone, Ayers House is one of the last remaining grand 19th century homes that once lined North Terrace. Sir Henry Ayers, who made his wealth from the Burra Burra Copper Mine, moved with his family to Ayers House in 1855.

Beaumont House

Beaumont was built in 1849 for the first Anglican Bishop of Adelaide, Augustus Short. The house has a distinctive Mediterranean character with an open brickwork parapet in soft terracotta colours and a central flat roof originally accessed by a staircase. By appointment only.

Collingrove

Begun in 1856, Collingrove was the Angas family home and headquarters for their considerable pastoral interests. It is now a museum with accommodation.

Engelbrook Reserve
Wattle Street, Bridgewater

Engelbrook Reserve was donated to the National Trust in 1964 to be preserved as a flora and fauna reserve. Today, the 27.5ha reserve contains stringybark open forest and over 220 species of native plants, including 35 that are of significance. Hiking tracks within the reserve include part of the Heysen Trail and a looped nature walk. Free entry.

Roachdale Reserve
Mount Lofty Ranges, near Kersbrook

The Reserve is one of the few remaining places in the Mount Lofty Ranges where you can see original native forest of the region. It is a refuge for native birds and other animals. A circuit nature trail takes around 45 minutes to walk.

Sandison Reserve
Heron Way, Hallett Cove

Ancient glacial features, formed during the Permian Ice Age 270 million years ago, make Hallett Cove one of the most significant geological sites in Australia. The oldest rocks in the area are of the Precambrian era of 600 million years ago. Excellent walking tracks and a part of Hallett Cove Conservation Park. Free entry

COROMANDEL VALLEY

The bakehouse operated from 1862 until the early 1940s. It is now a comprehensive museum depicting valley life from 1837.

Gamble Cottage

Built in 1902 for Joseph Gamble and his family. Gamble Cottage was bequeathed in 1982 for community use. It can be hired for small functions, weddings, exhibitions etc.

Watiparinga Reserve

Miss Alison Ashby gave this 32ha property to the National Trust of South Australia in 1957. With a previous history of farming and grazing the reserve is now, through the efforts of Miss Ashby’s niece, botanist Mrs Enid Robertson, a model of native vegetation regeneration.

The Station, designed by the Colonial Architect, was built of local stone with a slate roof. The Old Telegraph Station is now a folk museum.

Soon after the arrival of Governor Hindmarsh aboard HMAS Buffalo on December 28, 1836 a flagstaff was erected on the first ridge of sand-hills immediately south of the Patawalonga mouth to signify the command post of the new British province, later colony, of South Australia. In 1839, a Signal Mast was erected near this site on the second sand-hill from the sea at the end of Adelaide Road which is now called Anzac Highway so as to be clearly visible from another signal mast on West Terrace, Adelaide. Built in 1864 at the site of South Australia’s first ferry crossing on the Murray River, the Courthouse consists of a courtroom, police station and two cells, stables and loft, post and telegraph office and residential areas. It now operates as a heritage museum, cafe and bed & breakfast.

KANGAROO ISLAND

Penneshaw Maritime & Folk Museum

Built in 1921, and previously known as the Hog Bay School, it has the longest continuous history of any school on the Island. The Maritime Room commemorates navigators Matthew Flinders and Nicolas Baudin and the seamen, whalers and sealers who visited and settled in this locality. Numerous artefacts salvaged from the many shipwrecks also are shown. A magnificent donation to the Museum is the 1:48 scale model of Flinders’ sloop Investigator.

MOUNT LOFTY

This beautiful house and garden was bequeathed to the National Trust in the late 1960s. Adelaide architect Eric McMichael built Stangate from plans drawn up in London in 1937–39.

PORT ELLIOT

Constructed in 1853, the original tramway extended directly onto the jetty at Horseshoe Bay. In 1865 a new stone passenger station was constructed. The final 1911 development appears to have incorporated the original passenger station building in the construction.

Main feature at the agricultural museum is the Ruston-Proctor Steam Tractor and a Nicholson and Beinke plough built in Cowell in the 1800s. You can also visit the former Post Office and Post Masters’ residence, built in approximately 1882, which now houses a museum. It is located in Main Street, Cowell.

KOPPIO

Located in the old school, this museum houses a wide variety of cultural and environmental artefacts. A restored Kelsh Pioneer Cottage, built of pug and pine, contains many of the items used by early Kelsh families in 1886.

AUBURN

The Old Police Station and Courthouse were completed in 1860 and later extended. A variety of stone was used in the construction of the buildings, as well as handsawn Redgum and three different types of paving; flat slate paving, pitch paving and cobble work. Devonshire teas

The Burra Visitor Centre welcomes all of its visitors with a wealth of information including assistance with a diverse range of attractions, accommodation and tours. The Base Burra Heritage Passport can be purchased from the centre that self-guides visitors on an 11km trail around the town visiting 47 historic sites. A key and guidebook enables visitors to unlock the past in greater depth and enter 8 locked sites, including National Trust sites. Additionally, the Burra Visitor Centre offers a wide range of souvenirs for sale.

Bon Accord Cottage

The cottage is the original Mine Manager’s residence of the Bon Accord Mine Complex. Built in 1859, this heritage-listed cottage provides bed and breakfast accommodation. Please phone the Burra Visitors Centre for details.

Malowen Lowarth Cottage

This cottage, furnished with authentic 1860s artefacts, has a garden to suit the era. A guide takes visitors through the cottage and describes life in Burra during the early copper mining days. Part of the Burra Passport, which is available from the Burra Visitors Centre.

Miners’ Dugouts
Blyth Street, Burra

Around 600 dugouts were excavated in the banks of the Burra Creek between 1846 and 1851, to provide accommodation for an estimated population of 1800. This was over 40% of the population of what was then the seventh largest settlement in Australia. Part of the Burra Passport, which is available from the Burra Visitors Centre.

The Museum is a recreation of an old style general store, post office and family home at the turn of the century. Part of the Burra Passport, which is available from the Burra Visitors Centre.

Peacock’s Chimney Stack
Barrier Highway, Burra

The stack was used during the prosperous years of the copper mines. Peacock’s Chimney Stack was resited in 1971, following an appeal by the National Trust of South Australia. Free entry.

Police Lock-up & Stables
Helston Street, Burra

Erected at the rear of the first police station in 1847, the cells were used as a temporary Gaol until Redruth Gaol was built in 1856 with additional cells, stables and yard added in 1873. Dedicated to the National Trust in 1976, it is part of the Burra Heritage Trail.

Redruth Gaol
Burra

Redruth Gaol was erected in 1856 and was the first gaol in South Australia outside of Adelaide. The Gaol was closed in 1894 and prisoners transferred to Gladstone Gaol. In 1897, the Gaol was restored and reopened as a Girls Reformatory but closed in 1922. The Gaol is famous for the filming of the 1979 movie “Breaker Morant”. Part of the Burra Passport, which is available from the Burra Visitors Centre.

A stone building, built in the early 1870s as a butcher shop, a second storey was added later for a residence. The museum provides records and other information on local history, and displays household items used by pioneer families.

MELROSE

The Railway Station, built in a striking Victorian Pavilion style in 1902, and former Customs House form part of the Port Pirie Historic and Folk Museum. Features include the narrow gauge steam-shunting engine Port Pirie and Diprotodon bones found in the area.

RIVERLAND

Cobdogla Irrigation Museum

The museum originally was a major project to commemorate South Australia’s 150th birthday.  It focuses on the area’s irrigation history, particularly the unique Humphrey Pumps.

BERRI
Wilabalangaloo
Sturt Highway, 5 km NE of Berri on Renmark Road

Wilabalangaloo was part of the huge Cobdogla Station in 1846. Walking tracks along the river provide magnificent views of red sandstone cliffs. A homestead set in 24ha of native scrub, features photographs of the early days in the district.

 OVERLAND CORNER

The first stage of construction of the Overland Corner Hotel began in 1859. An underground water tank, dug in 1872, is still in existence. From 1897–1913 the Hotel was a post office. Artefacts are on display throughout the hotel and in the Old Post Office. Heron’s Bend Reserve covers 17ha and is an attractive picnic area. The reserve, located on a scenic gum-lined section of the river, has a backdrop of high limestone cliffs. The hotel continues to be a social gathering place. Facilities available include a front bar, a la carte dining, morning and afternoon teas and outdoor dining. Coaches/groups are welcome by appointment and camping is permitted. RENMARK

This 1880’s wooden-floored house was originally designed as a Canadian log cabin for the Chaffey brothers from Canada, who established the irrigation and fruit growing area of Renmark. It remains a working orangery and the orchard is fully operational, including its famous olive trees. Devonshire teas available.

SOUTH EAST
Old Wool & Grain Store

Built in 1879, the building measures approximately 63 feet across the front. The two-storey section at the front goes back 27 feet, and behind is a large warehouse section measuring 78 x 63 feet. The building now houses a museum.

KEITH
1910 Congregational Church

Built in 1910 as a community project, voluntary labour used local stone to construct the Church. It has a corrugated galvanised iron gable-ended roof with small ventilators near the apex, and stone quoins dress the random rubble stonework.

Early Settler’s Cottage

Built by William Davis in 1894, the cottage is constructed of local limestone and consists of two bedrooms, a parlour, and a kitchen.

KINGSTON
Cape Jaffa Lighthouse

The Lighthouse was officially opened in 1872 with an automatic light replacing the keeper in 1973. The National Trust re-erected the lighthouse in 1976 using original materials and specifications.

MILLICENT

The Millicent National Trust Museum began in 1960 in the first primary school in Millicent built in 1873. Major displays include 25 fully restored buggies, carriages and wagons, a large machinery shed, beautiful gowns, Millicent history, the Shipwreck Room and Aboriginal deep cave art replicas. The centre displays a collection of horse-drawn vehicles, a maritime room, a farming collection, a museum depicting rural life from the 1960s, and a collection of replica aboriginal cave art.

MOUNT GAMBIER

Work began on the pink dolomite stone courthouse in 1864. There have been a number of additions to the building, including: a fence erected in 1869; a verandah constructed in 1871; a new wing in 1878; and gas lighting which replaced kerosene lamps in 1892.

Edward and Robert Leake founded the Glencoe Station in 1844, naming it after a Scottish town famous for the massacre of 1692. The shearing shed is unique as it was never converted to mechanised shearing and it is set up as a museum of original and historic blade shearing and wool handling processes.

NARACOORTE
The Sheep’s Back

The building was constructed in 1870 as a flourmill and operated using water from the Naracoorte Creek, processing grain from Kingston and Robe. It is now an award-winning museum of the wool industry.

PENOLA

ROBE

Built (1863) of limestone with brick quoins, Customs House is a curiously shaped five-sided building with a panoramic view of Guichen Bay and the surrounding countryside.

YORKE PENINSULA
Old Centenary Hall

In 1878 the Church of Christ built a stone hall which was later owned by the Druids Lodge and the Rechabite Lodge. From 1922–28 it was Balaklava’s first high school. The building is now a local historic and folk museum.

 KADINA

Incorporates Matta House built in 1863 as the residence of the Manager of Matta Matta Mine. The Museum complex houses one of Australia’s largest and most significant collections of dry land farming equipment and a new interpretive centre. MAITLAND

MINLATON
Minlaton Museum

Minlaton and District Museum is located in part of an old General Store built about 1889 and contains in a special room memorabilia of Captain Harry Butler A.F.C., a local Pioneer Aviator, World War One fighter pilot and instructor. His 1916 authentically restored Bristol Monoplane, the only genuine one left in the World, is on display at Minlaton. Also displayed are many items pertaining to early Pioneer life in the area.

MOONTA
Hughes Pump House
North Terrace, Moonta Mines

Erected in 1865, this housed a 60-inch Cornish beam-pumping engine, which operated until the mine closed in 1923. It pumped water from the adjacent shaft to a depth of 366 metres and from Taylors Shaft, about 300 metres to the North, to a depth of 788 metres. Free entry.

 Moonta Mines Museum

Moonta Mines Museum houses thematic displays on the Cornish miners’. There are also extensive displays of costume, china, silverware, photographs, memorabilia and a classroom furnished in c. 1900. Take a 50 minute round trip by narrow gauge rail passing the reservoir and ore sorting floors, then through a tunnel in Ryans Tailings Heap. Departs hourly from the station adjacent to the Moonta Mines Museum.

Miner’s Cottage & Heritage Garden

Built in 1870, this cottage of the mine settlement is typically Cousin Jack. The National Trust has furnished cottage to the pre 1900 period. The characteristic picket fence encloses a picturesque heritage garden that has been recreated in the style of gardens established by mining families.

WALLAROO
