Brunner Industrial Site
Grey Valley, near Dobson, Westland
An early mining and industrial site with ruins of 19th century coalmining
and coke-making structures, including rare beehive coke
ovens. Interpretative panels explain the ruins and remains. Viewing
at any time during daylight hours.

Clark's Mill

A four-storeyed limestone flourmill built in 1866. Flour was
produced by the mill from 1867–1976. The mill was powered by
water from the Kakanui River until 1972, when it was converted to
electricity. The mill contains original machinery.
Open: Oct to Apr, Sun 1-3pm, and other times by local
arrangement.

Clifden Suspension Bridge
Just off State Highway 96, Tuatapere, Southland
Built in 1899 to span the Waiau River this impressive structure is
constructed from totara and Australian hardwood with concrete
towers and 28 wire ropes. It is a significant engineering
achievement and is one of the longest suspension bridges in the
South Island. The bridge is no longer open to traffic. The bridge
may be viewed at any time during daylight hours.

Coton's Cottage
Cotons Road, Hororata, Mid Canterbury

This cottage of rammed clay was first built in 1864 by Bentley
Coton, then rebuilt to original specifications in 1977, and houses the
Hororata Historical Society's collection.
Open: Sep to May, Sun 1.30-4pm, other times by arrangement with
the Secretary. Admission by donation.

Frenchman’s Gully Maori Rock Art Site
Off State Highway 1, south of Pareora, turn onto Pareora River
Road, left onto Craigmore Valley Road, then left onto Frenchman’s
Gully Road, South Canterbury
Many of the 200 year old rock art drawings in this gully can be seen
clearly. The smooth walls of limestone outcrops provided a canvas
for these Maori pictures of birdmen and fish.
The site can be viewed at any time during daylight hours.

An historic survivor of Kaikoura's whaling past, the town's oldest
surviving building (c.1860).

Hayes Engineering Works

A turn-of-the-century rural engineering works housed in mud brick
and stone, and corrugated iron buildings, with much of the plant
still in working order.
Open: Aug to Nov, weekends, 10am-5pm; Dec to Apr, daily 9am-
5pm; June and July by arrangement. Closed Christmas Day and
Good Friday.

A castle-like building erected in 1876 to signal the time to ships in
the harbour. The rare time ball mechanism is in working order and
the ball is dropped at 1pm daily.
Open: daily 10am-5.30pm; May to Oct Wed-Sun 10am-5pm. Closed
Christmas Day and Good Friday.

Matanaka Farm Buildings
Matanaka, near Waikouaiti, Otago
New Zealand's oldest farming buildings (c.1842) including a stable,
storehouse, granary and schoolhouse. External viewing at any time
during daylight hours.

Ophir Post Office

Built in 1886 of schist masonry with plaster quoins and window
dressings to serve the goldfields town. Now operates as a Post
Office agency.
Open: Mon-Fri 9am-12noon. Closed Public Holidays.

Rai Valley Cottage
Opouri Road, Carluke, Rai Valley
A pioneer cottage (1881) of Totara slabs, cut on the site by the
district’s first European settler and furnished in pioneer style. The
interior can be inspected through glass viewing panels during
daylight hours.

Southland Provincial Building
32 Kelvin Street, Invercargill
Built in 1864 as a Masonic Hall, the building was later bought by the
Southland Provincial government. Still in use commercially as a
retail shop. Exterior may be viewed at any reasonable time, interior
during normal business hours.

Restored limestone farm buildings where sheep were slaughtered
for the first export of frozen meat from NZ in 1882.
