Abkhazi Garden
Victoria, British Columbia
The garden was created by Prince and Princess Abkhaza and covers one
acre. The design is a natural landscape with dramatic glaciated rocky
slopes, native Garry oaks and a wonderful vista. There are Japanese
maples, conifers, rhododendrons and carpets of bulbs, alpines and
woodland companions.

Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary
Access through Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary, off Rainbow Road or off
Quadra Street in Victoria.
Christmas Hill and surrounding lands provide a greenspace area within
the Capital Region. The nature sanctuary has an ecologically significant
Garry oak meadow, a threatened native plant.

Clare Winnett Copeland Property
Shawnigan Lake, near Victoria
The area totals 0.91 hectares and is a healthy example of a Douglas-fir
ecosystem with no exotic species. The majority is mature old growth
Douglas-fir forest. On the west side are large Western red cedars
adjacent to a pond.

Craigflower National Historic Sites of Canada
Located along the Gorge waterway, Capital Region
The site consists of Craigflower Manor and Schoolhouse. Both were built
in the 1850’s and were operated under the auspices of the Hudson’s Bay
Company.

Creekside Rainforest
The area represents old growth hemlock and cedar rainforest and is the
only intact riparian habitat for salmon-bearing streams on Salt Spring
Island. It also contains at-risk species such as the coastal Cutthroat trout,
red-legged frog, and Pacific sideband snail.

Keating Farm Estate
Near Duncan, Vancouver Island
This 13 hectare farm property contains a number of heritage structures,
including the main 1880’s farmhouse. There is also a small wetland. The
property is in the Agricultural Land Reserve and currently has a heritage
orchard, bee hives, chickens, and fields for hay, grazing and mixed
vegetables.

Namaimo River
From Victoria turn right from the Trans-Canada Highway on to Thatcher
Road, then right on to Frey Road for 1.5 km. Look for TLC signs at the
pull-out.
The site contains 56 hectares of old growth Douglas-fir forest (an
endangered ecosystem) and is used for commercial and recreational
fisheries associated with the Nanaimo River and Haslam Creek. The intact
riparian zone along the river forms a transition between aquatic and
terrestrial environments. The property is easily accessed on foot.

Ross Bay Villa
This one-storey residence built in 1865 retains almost all its original
detailing, both inside and out. The design is restrained Gothic Revival
style. The grounds are restored to replicate the gardens appearance
during the late 1860s.
Open for tours first Saturday of every month from Mar to Oct at 2pm.

Sooke Potholes
Follow Highway 14 North towards Sooke, turn right into Sooke River
Road, 15 minutes drive to Sooke Potholes Provincial Park.
This property stretches 5km along the Sooke River where the deep,
polished rock pools and canyons known as the Potholes are located. It is
bound by the Sooke River and the Galloping Goose Regional Trail. The
area offers recreational activities such as swimming, cycling, running and
horse riding.

South Winchelsea Island
Located off Lantzvile (just north of Nanaimo), access by boat only.
The island is 10.4 hectares of largely undisturbed Garry Oak-Arbutus
ecosystem managed as an ecological reserve. There are several
endangered plant species and the island is a nesting place for many
species of birds. California and Steller Sea Lions frequently use the
shores. Visits are allowed – contact TLC in advance.

Wildwood
Merve Wilkinson established Wildwood in 1938 as an example of
sustainable forest management. Wildwood is a widely recognised model
for ecoforestry and has become a learning site for those wanting skills in
ecoforestry.
