Scotland’s first natural world heritage site. St Kilda is an archipelago of four main islands and sea stacs and is home to the largest colony of
seabirds in northern Europe. The St Kilda fieldmouse and St Kilda wren are unique to this isolated area and the primitive breed of Soay sheep has
been unchanged for 4,000 years. The village on the island of Hirta was laid out in the 1830’s and consists of a crescent of houses with
cultivated plots. Over 1,400 stone built cleitean for storing food and fuel are scattered over the islands. The area has stunning scenery and is
renowned as a dive site in Europe.

The area is well known for its marine vegetation, rock shore and spectacular cliff habitats. The islands have significant archaeological sites
with large areas being Scheduled Ancient Monuments. You can wander around the previous settlements that were abandoned in 1912.
